Australia's captain Poised for a Major Role in Iconic Rivalry
The Australian skipper has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an impressive average.
Australia's selection chief the selector has confirmed that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's Ashes series.
There were concerns that the veteran bowler might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that remained unresolved.
Earlier indications from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding whether he would play, with the five-Test series scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in Perth.
Bailey expressed that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about his chances of participating.
"It's clear that time is getting short and multiple considerations involved, not just his injury, but further aspects," the selector added.
"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a major part. With luck starting in Perth. If not, then we'll pick it up."
Previous Setbacks
The captain missed the ODI and T20 games against India and New Zealand recently after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.
He has a history of spinal problems, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons leading to absences from three Australian summers in four years.
He emphasized he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to make the squad for the series.
He mentioned that it was unclear if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his comeback but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the first Test.
Contingency Plans
Should Cummins not be fit, ex-skipper Smith will lead the side.
All-rounder Cameron Green was withdrawn recently from the national team for their one-day international series against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of an abdominal issue.
The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and mentioned that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."
"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to be available for the opening match as an all-rounder," Bailey explained.
"Originally, he'd only feature in the initial matches in any case. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, if it causes any delay for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to approach this more conservatively."
